About DNSmonitor
This is who we are, where we come from and why we do what we do.
Our history
With a background in IT security, communications, and systems administration, DNS Monitor was founded in early 2000 as an independent consultancy. Focusing on low-level Internet services in general and DNS in particular, our services have been in constant demand by private companies and public organisations alike.
The rapidly evolving IT industry and the rapidly growing demand for specialised IT services are putting pressure on every organisation. IT Operations staff seem to be constantly understaffed, and with a heavy workload, it is a constant struggle to learn each system they manage. We realised that a dedicated DNS monitoring tool would alleviate some of this workload while improving the quality of the DNS service.
The first embryo of a DNS monitoring tool was developed around 2010 as part of a customer project and was really nothing more than a collection of haphazardly assembled scripts that barely worked.
Since then, we have spent countless hours writing, rewriting, and fine-tuning the code, and since 2014, it has been running in full production on one of our partners’ platforms. But it wasn’t until 2016 that we secured enough funding to realise our ambitious goal of releasing a purpose-built, Internet-based DNS monitoring platform.
The monitoring system has been operational and available for several years, and we recently released our second major upgrade.
A word from the founder
“I became the operator of my first DNS in 1994. It was a Sun workstation running a BIND 4 DNS server. Since then, I have installed, configured and troubleshooted more DNS systems than I can remember.
It is quite obvious that DNS operations are taken far too lightly in most organisations and tend to fall between the cracks. Operations staff have many other responsibilities and rarely have the time or resources to develop the skills necessary to operate and troubleshoot modern DNS infrastructures efficiently.
So, I set out to build a tool to help understaffed people maintain control of Internet-facing DNS environments. That tool eventually became the DNS Monitoring Service. The rest is history.”
