DNS and related open source software
This list contains only open source DNS software with full documented support of IPv6 and DNSSEC.
Authoritative DNS software
BIND, Berkeley Internet Name Domain. The original DNS software and still the most implemented DNS software on the Internet. Continuously developed and maintained by ISC. The BIND software can be configured to run as both an authoritative server and as a caching resolver with DNSSEC validation.
PowerDNS Authoritative server is a flexible open source software. It enables the use of a variety of backend databases, allows scripting DNS answers to be used for dynamic redirections and filtering.
NSD is a fast and reliable authoritative-only name server software with lots of security features provided by NLNetLabs. It strives to be a reference implementation for emerging IETF standards.
Knot DNS is a high-performance authoritative-only DNS server which supports all key features of the modern domain name system. Knot DNS is maintained by CZ.NIC.
YADIFA is an authoritative-only name server implementation developed from scratch by .EU. It's clean, small, light and RFC compliant.
Recursive and caching
The Knot Resolver is a caching full resolver implementation, including both a resolver library and a daemon.
Unbound is a validating, recursive, caching DNS resolver. It is designed to be fast and lean and incorporates modern features based on open standards.
The PowerDNS Recursor is a high-end, high-performance resolving name server which powers the DNS resolution of at least a hundred million subscribers.
DNS related
OpenDNSSEC is a policy-based zone signer that automates the process of keeping track of DNSSEC keys and the signing of zones.
dnsdist is a highly DNS-, DoS- and abuse-aware loadbalancer. Its goal in life is to route traffic to the best server, delivering top performance to legitimate users while shunting or blocking abusive traffic.
